How COVID is lowering US life expectancy

The CDC has released its annual report on death and disease in the US. It shows a rise in mortality rates across the country, with COVID-19 the likely factor.

COVID to blame as U.S. life expectancy falls

Life expectancy fell in the United States in 2020 during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers at the federal level have recently compiled new data that show this.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics shows life expectancy dropped in 50 states and the District of Columbia.

COVID-19 and “unintentional injuries,” such as drug overdoses, are causes of the decline in life expectancy in the U.S.ABC News reported the drop in life expectancy from 78.8 to 77 years as the pandemic built momentum.

Life expectancies varied from state to state, with the West and Northwest having the highest life expectancy while states in the South had the lowest.

Hawaii had the highest life expectancy, at 80.7 years, followed by Washington, Minnesota, California, and Massachusetts. Mississippi had the lowest, at 71.9 years, making their future much darker. The other five states in the bottom five were West Virginia, Louisiana, Alabama, and Kentucky.

In 2020, COVID-19 was the third-highest cause of death, leading to more than 350,000 deaths. At the same time, more people are dying annually from drug overdoses. A record 83,500 fatal overdose cases were reported in 2020.
