New Treatment Methods to Tackle Migraine Pain

New Treatment Methods to Tackle Migraine Pain

The most frustrating aspect of migraines is that they can be challenging to treat. Fortunately, there are new treatment approaches that are quite effective.

There are many different approaches to treating migraines, but patients and doctors always look for new, effective treatments. The Timolol eyedrop treatment has surprised many people by being an effective migraine treatment. However, this treatment is only available in one randomized trial, which proved effective and quite promising.

Who would have thought timol eye drops could be a potent treatment for migraine headaches?

There are several other new and innovative treatments for migraine. One well-known treatment is calcium gene related peptide antagonists, which include monoclonal antibodies and "gepants." Monoclonal antibodies were approved for migraine prevention, providing about one to two fewer migraine days per month compared to placebo (2-5)

Both Ubrogepant and Rimegepant have been approved for the treatment of acute migraine. In clinical trials, about 20% of patients were pain free 2 hours post-dose, as opposed to 12% to 14% with placebo. Unfortunately, 80% of patients still had some pain within 2 hours. Zolmitriptan performs better with 34% of patients getting pain relief within 2 hours.

There are now nonpharmacologic options used for migraine treatment. A headband which stimulates the vestibular nerve by alternating warm and cold temperatures in your ear has been shown to reduce monthly or weekly migraine days by 1.1 compared to placebo, from a baseline of 7.7 to 3.9 days. Another device, which stimulates the vagus nerve, reduced migraine headache severity by 20% on average in about 33% of patients within 30 minutes. Sham treatment was effective for 18% of patients.

There are inexpensive and natural options to help with your migraine. When you take 2000 units of vitamin D, your monthly migraines will occur less often. Vitamin D was just as effective as gene-related peptide antagonists but less expensive. Peppermint oil, when used intranasally (in the nose) can offer a fraction of the pain relief that lidocaine does.

Although there might not be a perfect treatment for different intensities of migraine, there are many treatment options you can choose from to manage the symptoms.
