See How 150 Minutes A Week Of Exercise Can Save Your Life

Regular exercise reduces the risk of dying. People who engage in moderate or vigorous physical activity have a lower mortality rate than those who don't.

At least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity cuts risk for death

Healthy adults who reported moderate or vigorous physical activity are less likely to die of any cause over time when compared with those who do no exercise.

Although it is unclear whether higher levels of moderate or vigorous activity reduce mortality rates, the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend a minimum of 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate physical activity.

Dr Dong Hoon Lee of Harvard School of Public Health says that even though there have been few findings to show the potential impact of exercising, we still don’t know if any one type is better than another.

Long-term physical activity intensity correlated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates in 116,221 adults. Lee et al., a group assessed the self-reported leisure-time physical activity via questionnaires, repeated up to 15 times during follow-up. The mean age of participants was 66 years; most participants were white and free of chronic diseases at baseline. Researchers found that long-term intensity exercise was associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates.

47,596 participants died during 30 years of follow-up
The study found that engaging in long-term vigorous physical activity of 79 minutes or more per week led to a decreased risk of dying from any cause (HR = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.76-0.87), cardiovascular disease (HR = 0.69; 95% CI, 0.6-0.78) and non-cardiovascular reasons (HR = 0.85; 95% CI, 0.79-0.92).

Compared with those who reported no long-term moderate physical activity, those who met guidelines of 150-299 minutes per week had a 19% to 25% lower risk of death by all causes, CV and non-CV related causes.
Compared with participants who met the 150 minutes a week of long-term leisure time physical activity, those who reported 300-599 minutes per week have 3% to 13% lower mortality.
The findings support the current physical activity guidelines.

Studying the data, Dr Lee and his team found that people need to find the right intensity and not just time for physical activity to maintain their health.
The best way to do this is to make medium-to-high levels of moderate or vigorous activities a part of your life.
