Why You Should Avoid Banana Boat Sunscreens

A scalp spray made by Banana Boat has been withdrawn because it contains trace levels of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer at high levels.

A product for hair health has been recalled by Edgewell Personal Care Co. due to its trace amounts of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer at high levels.

According to an FDA recall alert, three batches of products were recalled by Banana Boat.

There are three batches with UPC labels that read 0-79656-04041-8, and the expiration is December 2022, February 2023, and April 2024.

The recall notice states that although benzene is not one of the ingredients in Banana Boat products, it came from the source that pushed out the liquid.

The company wrote that “no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or after these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.”

Benzene is a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur through the nose, mouth, or skin. It can result in conditions such as: leukemia, bone marrow cancer, and blood disorders.

Benzene is a ubiquitous substance, and humans get exposed to it every day. In theory, the small amounts in these products would be harmless.

Edgewell is not aware of any negative consequences related to the recall. The company has requested retailers remove from shelves products from specific batches that have defects.

If you purchased a product with one of the affected lot codes, Banana Boat will reimburse you. In the meantime, consumers should stop using the product and dispose of it.

About a year ago, Johnson and Johnson recalled an assortment of sunscreens. Those products included Aveeno and Neutrogena in spray cans.

Edgewell offers a number for consumers with questions about the recall at 888-686-3988. The company also provides information on the Banana Boat FAQ page, and complaints can be filed at start by filing a refund directly on the Banana Boat Recall page.
